Status and correction

Strata is an independent research prototype. It has not been used in a real client engagement. An earlier page presented an unsupported North Sea client story and quantified results. That material has been withdrawn. This note describes the implemented software and its current limits.

The engineering question

Historical well records can support a more structured exploration of comparable wells. The question is which records are relevant to a planned well, how they were selected, and what can reasonably be inferred from them.

Strata combines a map interface, a well-data API and an analogue-based duration estimator. The interface supports exploration of location, depth, drilling duration and derived difficulty indicators.

What the prototype does

Analogue ranking combines depth and geographic distance using fixed weights. Regime and optional campaign filters narrow the candidate set. Selected analogues can be inspected, and a saved forecast retains its chosen wells.

The estimator produces weighted drilling-duration quartiles—P25, P50 and P75—and metres-per-day estimates. When analogue support is insufficient, a baseline fallback is available. Diagnostics provide a way to inspect error, support and interval coverage.

These are implemented capabilities. Their presence does not establish successful predictive validation.

What it does not establish

The prototype does not substantiate calibrated cost distributions, formation-specific geological models, campaign correlation modelling or commercially validated planning outcomes. The displayed confidence categories reflect analogue support; they should not be interpreted as validated probabilities.

Before operational use, the evaluation design, interval coverage and production controls need further review. A technical demonstration can show the present implementation and discuss those boundaries.

Why this belongs in the portfolio

The engineering work connects geospatial data, retrieval logic, APIs, persistence and an interactive interface. It is a concrete example of product development and an open research question, rather than a completed customer engagement.
