Strata

Live product

Well planning intelligence
for complex programmes.

Strata treats well planning as a decision problem under geological and operational uncertainty. Analogue selection is systematic, difficulty estimates are calibrated, and cost ranges are honest — from individual wells to campaign level.

Built for

  • Well planning and subsurface teams
  • Drilling engineers and programme managers
  • AFE and cost estimation leads
  • Technical directors and asset managers

The planning problem

Well planning produces detailed, quantitative work products — spreadsheets, AFEs, timeline Gantts — that look rigorous. But the uncertainty inside those estimates is rarely made explicit. Point estimates are presented as commitments. Optimism accumulates.

The root cause is usually not engineering error. It is information fragmentation: different teams working with different analogue sets, different cost databases, and different interpretations of formation difficulty — without a shared framework for reconciling the differences.

Strata provides that shared framework. Analogue selection is documented, difficulty estimates are calibrated, and uncertainty ranges propagate from well level to campaign level.

Capabilities

Multi-dimensional analogue search

Retrieves comparable wells using explicit, adjustable weights across geological, operational, and trajectory dimensions. Returns analogues in the context of a specific planning question, not a generic similarity ranking.

Formation difficulty modelling

Formation-specific models for key trouble zones: reactive shales, lost circulation intervals, HPHT sections. Calibrated against historical performance with out-of-sample validation.

P10/P50/P90 cost estimation

Probabilistic cost estimates with explicit uncertainty accounting. Campaign-level correlation modelling shows how individual well uncertainty aggregates — and why it's larger than naive summation.

Expert analogue library

Curated analogue sets annotated with planning context and expert rationale. Version-controlled so that analogue selection history is preserved alongside well performance outcomes.

Campaign-level analytics

Aggregates well-level estimates into campaign distributions. Identifies which wells drive the most uncertainty, enabling focused planning attention where it has the most impact.

Data quality management

Systematic flagging of wells with incomplete records or data quality issues. Prevents historically problematic wells from silently distorting analogue sets.
